Barber quarter tops B&M sale

A 1901-S Barber quarter graded MS-68 by the Professional Coin Grading Service sold for a record-setting $327,750 in Bowers and Merena’s official auction at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Spring Expo, which was held March 2-6.

It was one of three highlight lots singled out by Steve Deeds, B&M president.

“A trio of fresh, original rarities led the way by bringing particularly strong prices,” he said of the results that totaled  approximately $5.5 million for U.S. coins, $1.3 million for paper money and $1.5 million for world coins.

The second coin of the trio was a 1915-S Panama-Pacific round gold $50. Graded PCGS MS-66, it sold for $281,750.

“A very rare proof striking of the 1879-O Morgan dollar sold for $184,000,” Deeds said describing the third coin of the trio. It was a PCGS Proof-64.

“The Cuyahoga Collection of Charlotte and Dahlonega Mint Gold also performed very well in our March Baltimore Auction, Deeds recounted.

Important pieces from this Numismatic Guaranty Corp. Registry Set included an 1839-C Liberty Head $5 gold piece in MS-63 that realized $126,500 and an 1849-C Liberty Head $2.50 gold piece called MS-65 that sold for at $103,500.

Bringing $54,050 was an 1867 Shield nickel with rays called Proof-65 by PCGS.

Another piece from the Cuyahoga Collection, an 1839-C Classic Head $2.50 graded MS-60 by NGC, fetched $34,500.

An NGC MS-65 1798/7 Draped Bust dime with 16 stars crossed the block for $29,046.

A bid of $28,175 purchased a Jefferson Portrait 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold dollar graded Proof-66 Cameo  by PCGS.

Though not a coin, a Kellogg 7 Humbert Assayers, gold ingot, bar No. 794, weighing 56.91 ounces of 880 fine, gold realized $132,250.

The world coin sale was called by Ponterio & Associates.

“Capitalizing on our firm’s long-standing relationship with the Whitman Baltimore Expo we were able to conduct a highly successful auction,” said Rick Ponterio, executive vice president of Bowers and Merena.
