Apollo 11 Five-Ounce Proof Silver Dollar Back in Stock

On Sept. 12, the United States Mint announced that the 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Five Ounce Proof Silver Dollar was back in stock. We have confirmed that the Mint’s website is continuing to take orders for this popular coin, which is struck in the Philadelphia Mint facility.

In addition to the historic event that this coin commemorates, it is also the first commemorative silver dollar in the United States to be struck from .999 pure silver, making it more valuable than past commemorative silver dollars which are composed of 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.

Adding to its uniqueness, this coin is one of the first dome-shaped in the United States to be struck with a proof finish and reeded edge.

With a retail price of $229.95, collectors and historians alike will be happy to know that a portion of the cost of the coin sales will be donated by the US Mint to the Smithsonian National air and Space Museum’s “Destination Moon” exhibit, the Astronauts Memorial Foundation and the Astronauts Scholarship Fund.  If all of the 2019 Apollo 11 commemorative coins were to sell out, those organizations would share in $14.5 million.

The total mintage for these coins is 100,000 and as of this writing, 65,083 have been sold.  Of those, 51,271 were sold within the first 24 hours. The coins will go off sale on December 31, 2019.
