Ambassadors convene in Hawaii

Eight of Krause Publications’ Numismatic Ambassadors were in one room Oct. 28 during the semi-monthly meeting of the Honolulu Coin Club. While Ambassadors are found across the country, it is a rare occurrence to find so many at a local gathering.

Ambassadors present at the meeting were Patti Jagger-Finner, Gregory Hunt, Marion Kendrick, Charles Matsuda, Crane Hatsuo Saito, Michael Stanley, Michael “Stan” Turrini and Wah Kui Young.

Hunt is president of the Honolulu Coin Club, and Wah Kui Young is still active in the club at age 94. Finner regularly travels to Hawaii and contributes to the club and HSNA’s events and activities. Stanley is a U.S. Navy retiree who once was stationed in Hawaii and involved with both the Honolulu Coin Club and HSNA. It was Turrini’s first trip.

“[Michael Stanley] and I had planned for months to visit Hawaii and share some of the ‘island style,’” said Turrini, California hobby advocate. “We had planned our trip to include both the meeting of the Honolulu Coin Club and the popular Hawaiian State Numismatic Association Annual Convention.”

The HCC meeting featured a program titled “How to Do the Best Deal at a Coin Show,” from longtime Hawaiian hobbyist Francis Lu. Several members offered perspectives and advice.

Show-and-tells were given by Stanley, who displayed a 1876 proof trade dollar, and Turrini, who showed a Hawaiian King Kalakua autograph.

At the HSNA convention, Finner coordinated and supplied materials for a Boy Scout Coin Collecting Merit Badge Clinic. More than 40 Scouts participated in the two hour-long clinics held Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.
