The latest American Innovation Dollar honors Frederick McKinley Jones, whose revolutionary refrigerated truck transformed military logistics and commercial transportation.
The U.S. Mint’s American Innovation Dollar program began in 2018 with up to four new coins released each year. On July 28, the latest edition of the Minnesota Innovation Dollar will be released.


The reverse design shows a 1940s-era truck with an early front-mounted refrigeration unit. The first of these trucks was invented by Frederick McKinley Jones in the late 1930s. The final product, the Thermo Control Model C automatic truck refrigeration unit, was originally intended for military use to help preserve blood, medicine, and food during World War II. Following the war, the invention quickly became available for commercial use.
