From the June 8 Numismatic News E-Newsletter:

Should there be a Nobel Prize for numismatic research?

Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers to Editor Dave Harper.

For numismatics, no.

Wesley Ellis
Portland, Ore.

You got to be kidding. How about a Nobel for auto mechanics, or sculpture?

Yes, I’ll accept it anytime.

For the Nobel prize, not necessary. More life important issues to consider. Other prizes may be considered.

Gary Kess
Sherman, Texas

While it is important for significant accomplishments in numismatic research to be recognized, the idea of a Nobel Prize for it is ridiculous.

Perhaps an endowed prize might some day bear the name of Eric Newman. That is something I could wholeheartedly support.

If the Nobel committee wants to make numismatics the subject of mirth, they should suggest such an award.

Fortunately, they have more dignity than you do in even asking such a question.
