There's Platinum in Them Catalytic Coverters!
Posted by tom
Modern Day Prospectors Targeting a Car Near You
News from Cinncinnati
and around the country is that thieves have been stealing catalytic converts for thier platinum and palladium. They slip under parked cars and use portable power saws, probably something like a reciprocating Sawzall to cut out the converts in a matter on just a few minutes. Apparently scarp yards and chop shops are paying about $50 to $100 per converter, based on todays preciosu metal spot prices.
This kind of theft has been occuring for some time now in the base metals catagories. Copper piping and copper wire, sewer grates and manhole covers all have been at risk, as theives cash in on the rising prices at scrap yards.
This is the first report I have noticed on any precious metals risks of street theft however, but I am sure it could be an ever growing problem. Better keep an eye out for troubles of this sort in your area. Some areas are begining to offer solutions, like serial numbers on your converter. Replacing a catalytic converter can cost between $500 and $1000, depending on make, model and aftermarket or original manufacturer source.

Triple Feature - Employee, Vinny & In-Laws
Posted by tom
Tom's Recommended Film's of the Week
Employee of the Month - My Cousin Vinny & The In-Laws
The Summer months are usually a very busy time for me, what with regular stuff, like lawn mowing and laundry, blog posting and market research, plus the addition of special projects like garage painting and kids camps, infrequently produced catalogs and car show book sales. This particular summer has proven a challenge, both at home and work. Needless to say, I have less time in the summer for movie watching and my weekly Film of the Week postings suffer because of this.
In fact, you may have noticed that I have gotten pretty lax in recommending films each week. I've missed several and for this I apologize and offer this consolation prize.
For whatever reason I find that when I am pressured for time, I tend to watch quick comedies. Maybe it's good for reducing my stress levels and letting my mind relax. At any rate, it's what I do, so as consolation for having missed some weeks of recommendations and to help you all relieve your own summer stress, this week I am recommending three recently viewed, light and entertaining comedies.
First up is Employee of the Month, the Dane Cook vehicle which pokes a little fun at the big super stores, like Sam's Club and Walmart. I like Cook's comedies, but some are way to vulgar to recommend to my broad spectrum of readers without multiple caviates. Employee of the Month, however, is much more light hearted and mainstream, with basic themes of personal developement, corporate goofyness and loyalties to friendships. The cast, featuring Andy Dick, Tim Bagley, Efren Ramirez (of Vote For Pedro fame) and Marc Mouchet among many others, is wonderful and the writing is great.
Next in line is My Cousin Vinny, which pits North vs. South, City vs. Country and authority vs. youth, in a most pleasantly unique film. Joe Pesci enjoys the funniest role of his career outside of the Home Alone films and is supported by a stellar cast including Marisa Tomei and Fred Gwynne. Pick it up, put it in the player and let the story unfold naturally. It's sure to get you laughing.
Last is The In-Laws, the Michael Douglas - Albert Brooks remake of a classic story of pre-wedding day jitters and mishaps. I like the original, but this one gets even more extreme in a Meet the Parents kind of way. It's a great ride and full of action and savy comedy. Brooks is wonderful and Douglas displays great comic timing, but Ryan Reynolds is the pro in the background who cracks me up with just a look, like the KC and the Sunshine Band happy face just before his finacee drops the bomb.
So lighten-up, watch one or all of these movies and have some fun this summer between your own special projects and commitments. You deserve a break!

UBS Predicts Gold Unsustainable Above $930
Posted by tom
UBS Predicts Gold Turn In 2008
Amidst plenty of bullist talk about the upside for gold prices, Allen Sheals of UBS spoke out today in Singapore about the possibilities of a bearish market turn. The two main factors driving Sheals comments were a break-up of demand and the forthcoming unloading of European Central Bank stock holds.
Sheals cited indications from the jewelry trade, pending Central bank actions, growing scrap supply, stable mining supply and an end to producer dehedging.
The massive numbers of investor dollars moving into Exchange Traded Funds and gold tied or based funds is also an indicator. Common sense should tell you that if you see a whole lot of people running frantically in one direction, you might be wise to calmly walk the other way.
My advice? Watch the Federal Reserve and Central Banks as they attempt to stem inflation. If they hit on a winning combination, gold and silver may settle down quickly.

Melting the Palace of Gold
Posted by tom
Melting Everything But The Golden Throne
2008 has brought gold as high as it's ever been! Investors have reacted, down to the lowest levels. The coin market has reacted, with prices rising higher all the time. Jewlers are advertising and buying scrap chains and rings. The press has spread the word to every nook and cranny. Gold is the commodity on which all eyes are resting.
Case in point - the Swisshorn Gold Palace is finally being melted down. Yes, that's right, chinese jewerly mogul Lam Sai-wing is dismantling and melting down the palace of gold he built up when gold was so woefully ignored by investors, collectors, the general public and the media.
Lam Sai-wing will melt and sell everything he built, except for his golden thone, the 24 karat gold toilet. The rest, all 6 tons of it, will go towards a serious expansion of his jewerly retail business, Hang Fung Gold Technology.

EBay Held Accountable for Counterfeits
Posted by tom
EBay Held Accountable for Fakes Sold on Their Site
Big news from Paris, France today! A French commercial court decided that eBay must pay LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA $59,000,000. The french designer fashion firm sued eBay over the large number of knock-off and counterfiet desinger products offered through sellers on eBay's auction site.
EBay does take down auctions of proven counterfeits, but numismatists know that many, many counterfeit coins slip through and are sold to unwitting novices every day on eBay. Those of us who work professionally in coins get calls regularly from eBay buyers who are just begining to arrive at the notion that they have been taken in a particular transaction.
The trademark seams on the edge or at the rim of a cast fake, or lack of flow lines as found on a struck coin are simple things to look for when judging if a coin is legitmate. In numismatics, simple education can help a great deal in the buyer making better choices.
Perhaps eBay would be wise to enlist expert assistance in establishing tutorials designed to give participants a solid, but brief overview of specific fields of collection or high end products. They do have some on their site, but there are many areas which are not covered at all. A little shared knowledge might go a long way in policing the eBay community.
In the meantime however, you can learn a lot about coins from websites such as NumisMaster, or Ken Potter's website. Books like the U.S. Coin Digest, Coin Collecting 101, Strike It Rich With Pocket Change, Bill Fivaz's Counterfeit Detection Guide and Detecting Counterfeit Gold Coins can also offer valuable information to keep people from wasting time and money in bad numismatic choices.

Clearance Price Coin Books at Krause
Posted by tom
Two Key Books on Clearance at Krause Publications
There are two bargain priced books out on the KP book site at the moment which might be of interest if you are building a broad numismatic library on a tight budget.
The first is a specialty book we produced in 2006 titled Coins of Northern Europe & Russia. This is a handy little catalog printed in the 6"x9" format, good for travel and quick reference. I covers a slew of countries including Russia, Sweden, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Denmark, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Iceland, Greenland, Luxembourg, Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland, and many others. Time fram is staggered, but the idea was to cover from 1850 or earlier up to present date. Some countries listings go back as far as the 1820's and some of the Pobjoy countries like Isle of Man or Guernsey end at the early 1970's. We tried to stay with clear breaking points which coinsided with currency reforms, government or coinage type changes. Most types are illustrated, but individula dates are not strung out as in the larger Standadr Catalogs. For this handy book we chose to list date ranges and select a base array of prices by grade, giving the reader a baseline price guide by type.
At the KP book site this volume is currently less than half cover price at $12.00. A baragin price for such a compact and useful price guide.
The second title worth looking up is the current 19th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins, which has been reduced from $65.00 to $55.00 for the moment. If you do not yet have a copy of this 5th edition covering 1801-1900, why not pick one up this week.

Cautious With Commodities
Posted by tom
Cautions In Commodity Investment
I always try to err on the side of caution. Where investment is concerned I tend to do my homework and often find myself swimming outside the whirl pools that are a consequence of trends.
That is why the Walewski and Bendahan article on CityWire caught my eye, ear and interest this morning. Here are two very prominent fund managers limiting their exposure to precious metals. Going against the trend in a still rising market! Always a good warning sign for us little folks.
Where gold, silver, platinum and palladium are concerned, your holdings will always have value. Just don't get the idea that their value will always go up. As with any investment it is never wise to hold on too long trying to hit the peak. If you find yourself at the top of a market with large holdings, it's not so easy to jump off before the downhill slide. Selling in a declining market can be difficult and holding on, waiting for a return of the bull market can sometimes take years. Ask anyone who had a stake in gold or silver in 1979 and still had it in 1980.

Swiss Shoot Talers
Posted by tom
Swiss Shooting Festival Talers
Lately I have noticed some confusion and concern over the listing of Swiss Shooting Talers in our catalogs. Actually this has been a long-running debate and one which can be viewed from several sides with no definitive answer.
I bring it up again now, because I saw a question on the E-Sylum of the Numismatic Bibliomania Society from Bob Knepper. Bob was looking for illustrations of the Swiss Shooting Talers issued past 1960, so I emailed Wayne Homren, the E-Sylum editor, with the following information:
Regarding Bob Kneppers question about Swiss Shooting Talers. We list them in the Unusual World Coins Catalog, which is in it's 5th edition and available form coin dealers or from our bookstore at http://www.krausebooks.com/product/647/4
Many, but not all, Swiss Shooting Taler types are illustrated in UWC. In the Swiss section you will also find other local Swiss medallic issues and types of limited circulation. I like the Huguenin Freres Talers, which are readily available in the market and feature views of various cities.
We hope to continue adding to these listings, as each new years issues are released and are doing this with the assistance of Craig Keplinger. Craig is a dealer in Swiss coins, with a specialization in the Shooting Festival coins.
Collectors of this series will also want to keep an eye on NumisMaster at http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis.jsp as the new issues Craig supplies the data for will first be listed there on the website before they appear in a printed work such as UWC. Craig is also working to get all types illustrated on NumisMaster well before we produce a 6th edition of UWC.
Depending on page count and size limits, we also would like to add the Swiss Shooting Talers back into the regular Standard Catalog series at some point in the future. For the moment however, NumisMaster provides a ready and accessible outlet for collectors to keep up to date.
The rest of the discussion regarding Swiss Shooting Talers centers around where they should be listed.
A few years ago the Swiss Shooting Talers were moved from the Standard Catalogs to Unusual World Coins. This was done both for practical and technical reasons. The practical involved our ever expanding page count problems, while the technical revolves around the limited circulation times and legal tender status for this series.
After this move, several dealers, including specialist Craig Keplinger, classical 19th Century coinage dealer Dennis Gill and Islamic specialist and general world coin dealer and cataloger for Heritage Scott Cordry, have talked with me about getting the Swiss Shooting Talers back into the regular Standard Catalogs. Former concerns over page count, or arguments over limited circulation aside, their point was that these Festival coins are widely collected and maintain a status as prominent as regular Swiss issues.
They all make a good point and the editors of the SCWC series are listening. In the meantime however, collectors can avoid all these hard copy problems of which catalog the Swiss Shooting Talers will appear in by using NumsiMaster. Being a website, with all the coin, token and medallic listings our catalogs have to offer, NumisMaster provides the data, values and images you need plus the ability to search, pull and arrange them in the structure you want.
It's the best of both worlds at an annual subscription price which is lower than the cost of two of our large paper catalogs.

Panama Silver Balboa Sets Rising
Posted by tom
High Silver Spot Requires Raise in Balboa Sets
Yesterday I had a call from Standard Catalog contributor Peter N. Berger in Panama. Peter had gotten his new 36th edition Standard Catalog of World Coins and was searching through the DVD listings for Panama when he noticed that some of the proof set prices seemed too low. With the rise in spot silver, some of the 1 Balboa and 5 Balboa silver proof values had slipped a bit below current melt pulling the set values down with them.
We talked a little about the DVD, which Peter found pretty useful, and about how we would correct the 1 & 5 Balboa listings and the sets out on NumisMaster. I explained to Peter that since the catalog becomes a fixed entity once our designer runs the pages, NumisMaster has become an ideal and essential spot to keep current prices updated and available to collectors and dealers alike. Peter had yet to try NumisMaster, but I think after our conversation he will be signing up soon. The new all encompassing $79.95 one year subscription price, covering 1601-Date for all world coinage, is a great price and Peter thought it sounded like a real bargain.
After hanging up the phone I took an hour or so to enter all the updates for the silver 1 & 5 Balboas in Panama and then I updated all the proof and mint set listings to reflect current values. Stop by NumisMaster and check it out. There's always new data, new issues, new values and updates being entered, making NumisMaster a vital tool for world coin collectors.
