Plans for next year are becoming ever clearer as the last days of 2013 are checked off my calendar.
My first trip of the year will be on Jan. 8, 2014, when I head for Orlando, Fla., and the Florida United Numismatists show. It should be a good one – even if it simply allows me to escape the current Wisconsin winter for a few days.
I will not be going to the World Money Fair in Berlin next year. Publisher Scott Tappa and Standard Catalog staffers George Cuhaj and Tom Michael will be there Feb. 8 to present the 2014 Coin of the Year Award to the Monnaie de Paris for its Yves Klein silver 10-euro coin dated 2012.
If escaping winter is my sole reason for travel, going to Berlin in February is a fairly even trade compared to this part of the world.
Next year the Central States Numismatic Society will celebrate its 75th anniversary at its April 23-26 convention in Schaumburg, Ill. It should be a good event. Anniversaries are important and I look forward to the celebration, and the CSNS gathering has historically been a good commercial show. I expect the auction to be a barn-burner.
The American Numismatic Association will hold its World’s Fair of Money Aug. 5-9 in Rosemont. It is the second year of a three-year commitment to that location.
No matter where it is held, it is an important show to attend and I look forward to seeing the crowds, old friends and acquaintances.
Whether and how I go to Krause Publication’s shows usually remain open questions until closer to the show dates because attending is so much easier for me. Some years I am in and out in a single day. Other years see me there for the duration.
The Chicago Paper Money Expo is set for March 6-9 in Rosemont. The Chicago International Coin Fair is slated for April 10-13.
It is too much to hope that everything about 2014 will be settled by year end, but the broad outlines are now visible.
