Last platinum numbers before sale

Going into the Mint clearance sale Nov. 15 I know some collectors will be evaluating the possibilities of low-mintage American Eagle coins, especially the platinum versions that I have spent so much time on in the last few days.

I have the latest sales figures here and that might help those trying to figure out the angles.

The “W” uncirculated platinum American Eagle numbers went up a tad.

The one-ounce is at 423. The half ounce is 849. The quarter ounce is 2,115 and the tenth ounce is 2,504. The number for the four-coin set is 1,257.

The proof platinum numbers start with 1,670 one-ounce coins. The half ounce is 837. The quarter ounce is 1,081. The tenth ounce is 2,398. The four-coin set is 1,571.

Other numbers for other Mint offerings are posted in Mint Statistics every Thursday.

The Mint’s "sale" should be interesting. I wonder if they will have a special sale section of their website or the items will be intermixed in with the regular items? My credit card and I are ready!

The Mint pulled all these coins unceremoniously yesterday, and they were repriced today; having read the press releases, I believe the discontinued coins are not part of the clearance sale.

Also, the Mint’s quick and unannounced repricing puts a lot of people in an uncomfortable situation–many buyers since the platinums came back on sale October 17 are still within the 30 day return window. So, for example, anyone who purchased a 4 coin platinum proof set October 17 paid $2419.95. That set has been repriced to $2179.95; a savings of $240.

But the Mint has no plans to refund the difference – the only way to save the $240 is to RETURN the original set as a canceled order, and simultaneously order a new set to replace it at the lower price. It’s bad for everyone concerned; the Mint will likely be getting a number of returns where the person really would have been happy to keep the coins but just wants the $240 difference (or other amounts- the gold unc set is a difference of $177.5, etc.)

  4. Dan says:

Oh, and I called the Mint. The normal customer service rep said no refunds for the difference would be issued. Someone else reported being told that the difference for orders placed in the last 7 days would be credited. Further complicating things, some coins were repriced upwards – like the smaller platinum proofs or buffalo golds.

I also called the Office of Public Affairs number (202) 354-7222 and was transferred to a Ms. Seay; I left a message at approximately noon explaining the unintended consequences of the unannounced repricing, but have not received a return call.
