Will gorgeous gold proofs goose ‘S’ sales?

Deliveries of proof $5 gold San Francisco Old Mint commemorative coins are occurring across the country.

Aside from a reported loose-capsule problem where the coin has popped out of the holder during shipment, hobby reviews of the new coin have been very favorable.

The design is gorgeous. Seeing the old $5 reverse design from 100 years ago in proof seems to delight many. It is too bad that more potential buyers cannot see the coin. Sales would probably rise faster. This week?s San Francisco numbers are up, but there is no great strength or weakness evident.

Though the overall sales numbers for the gold and platinum coins are still rather low, they are jumping higher. The gold half-ounce coin jumped by 438 pieces to 1,050. The gold quarter ounce sprang ahead by 464 to 1,158. The gold tenth is up by 1,342 to 5,351.

The uncirculated 2006-W silver American Eagle sales rose by 12,735. That compares to a 10,302-coin increase for the silver proof to 757,838. Sales of the three-coin 20th anniversary silver set have crossed the 200,000 mark.
