Uncirculated ‘W’ Eagle sales near

Sales of the 2012-W silver American Eagle uncirculated coin are slated to begin Aug. 2 approximately a month after uncirculated gold Eagle sales started.

Price of the silver collector coin has not yet been set due to the fluctuating price of silver bullion. The proof version is currently priced at $59.95 and usually the uncirculated counterpart is priced lower.

The .999 fine coin carries the “W” mintmark for West Point to distinguish it from standard bullion coin issues that have no mintmark. The coin is also struck on a specially burnished blank.

For collectors, the only way to obtain the “W” uncirculated silver Eagle is to buy it directly from the Mint. Standard bullion Eagles are sold only through the Mint’s network of authorized purchasers and cannot be purchased from the Mint by collectors.

The “W” uncirculated collector silver Eagle coins are a relatively recent addition to the Mint’s product line-up, commencing with the 2006-W issue. The Walking Liberty obverse design was created originally by Adolph A. Weinman for use on the half dollar 1916-1947. The reverse heraldic eagle is by John Mercanti.
