On April 18, a nearly unanimous House of Representatives approved the measure 408-4 and sent it to the Senate for consideration.
If approved a 2016 gold $5 coin and silver dollar would be struck – but no copper nickel half dollar – with mintage ceilings of 100,000 gold coins and 350,000 silver dollars.
While there was no concerted opposition in the House, the voting was also a rarity: four members actually voted no, two voted present but declined to support the measure and 17 did not vote. Most coin bills pass by unanimous consent.
Under current House and Senate rules, two-thirds of each body must approve co-sponsorship before a vote can be held. There are only eight co-sponsors in the Senate.
