Steinberg’s issues fall gold list

Dealer Steinberg’s, Inc. has issued its latest price list, “Gold Coins of the World,” for fall 2011. The list contains the firm’s purchases from the past several months including from the American Numismatic Association’s Chicago World’s Fair of Money, as well as from its auction and private treaty purchases.

An ancient Greek highlight is a Macedonia gold stater of Phillip II that features the head of Apollo on the obverse and a charioteer on the reverse. Graded VF-25 by Independent Coin Graders, it’s priced at $2,950.

One of the list’s standouts is a 4 escudos from Costa Rica dated 1837-CR that features the sun over mountain peaks on the obverse and a tree on the reverse. It is the type without the lion countermark. Graded AU-58 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, it’s listed at $9,500.

A 1925-Mo El Salvador 20 colones marking the 400th anniversary of San Salvador that NGC calls MS-66 lists for $6,500.

German collectors will be interested in a 1963 John F. Kennedy 30 ducats graded PF-65 by NGC. It’s sale price is $7,500.

Sure to draw attention is a shipwrecked Mexican 1713-MoX-J 8 escudos cob of Philip V with crowned arms on the obverse and legend around a cross on the reverse. It was recovered from the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet wrecks. Graded MS-62 by NGC, it carries a price tag of $12,500.
