Spink USA, Inc., a numismatic and philatelic auction house headquartered in Dallas, Texas, announced May 2 that Stephen L. Goldsmith has joined the firm as senior vice president.

“Mr. Goldsmith brings over 30 years of numismatic and managerial experience to Spink USA, and we are delighted to have him here,” said President Charles Shreve.

Goldsmith’s numismatic career commenced in 1960, at the age of 13, when he became one of the founding members of the Rockaway Beach Coin Club in New York City.

In 1973, he joined the firm of Jules Karp, Inc., and as the primary buyer, helped it grow into a multi-million dollar coin company. In 1984, Karp acquired paper money auction house NASCA until 1985, when he founded his own numismatic firm, Atlantic Bank Note & Coin Company.

When R.M. Smythe & Company acquired NASCA-KARP, Goldsmith became the firm’s auction director. Between May of 1985 and August of 2007, he helped R.M. Smythe conduct more than 200 auctions. Those sales included the four largest Confederate paper money and bond collections ever sold.

Under Goldsmith’s direction, Smythe obtained the world’s largest obsolete bank note consignment, the Herb and Martha Schingoethe Collection, containing more than 30,000 different examples and ultimately realizing more than $13 million – a world record.

He was the lead cataloger for many of these important paper auctions, and also cataloged many of the U.S. coin consignments Smythe received over the years.

In 2007, Goldsmith was hired by Stack’s as its director of numismatics.

He has written and edited many numismatic books and articles.

“Spink has a tradition of excellence in numismatics and philatelics that reaches all the way back to 1666,” Goldsmith said. “I look forward to continuing that tradition each time we conduct an auction at Spink USA.”

Goldsmith can be reached by phone at (212) 262-8400, or by email sgoldsmith@spink.com.
