The actual 10-year anniversary was Sept. 11 but the Goes, who operated a coin store in Las Vegas for 12 years before relocating to Reno, didn’t want their anniversary celebration to exploit the significance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
“When we planned our opening back in September 2011,” said Rusty Goe, “there was no way we could have predicted we would be flipping on the lights on the most catastrophic day in U.S. history.”
They knew the success of their anniversary event would depend on publicity from the local media.
“We told the newspaper reporters and TV station anchors how gold and silver prices had risen dramatically during our 10 years in Reno,” said Marie Goe, “and we also told them how the recession has affected our business.”
Rusty Goe takes pride in Southgate’s practice of hiring local college students. “We have employed 55 college-age kids over the past 10 years,” he said.
More than 50 people, including supporting Chamber of Commerce members, attended the gala festivities at the Southgate shop on Sept. 14. KOLO-8 TV reporter Faun Kime, video camera in hand, covered the three-hour event.

The Goes and staffers Maya Roberts and Nicole Hoff served refreshments to the guests. Roberts and Hoff presented two mini-lectures – one on how to build a 20th century type coin set and another on how to find values for coins – to a packed audience seated in the showroom.
Rusty Goe presented a lecture about the Carson City Mint and its coins. Whitman 20th century type coin albums were given away to attending children, and one lucky attendee received an 1883-CC GSA silver dollar when his ticket was drawn in a free raffle.
“The open house celebration was 10 years in the making and took four months of planning, and in the end, Rusty and I feel very blessed for the way it turned out,” said Marie Goe,
In honor of the anniversary, the Goes published a book, Southgate Coins – Success on South Virginia Street. It is a pictorial history of the company’s first 10 years in Reno.
