Silver Eagles set sales record in 2014

The numbers are in and 2014 is the new highest sales year for the silver American Eagle bullion coin.

As of Dec. 9, the Mint reports it has sold 43,051,000 silver Eagles, surpassing the previous record in 2013 of 42,675,000.

The 2014 American Silver Eagle saw a record year in terms of coins sold.

The 2014 American Silver Eagle saw a record year in terms of coins sold.

“Our American Eagle gold and silver bullion coins continue to remain the coin of choice for investors around the world,” said United States Mint Deputy Director Richard Peterson. “We are proud of our role as a leader in the global bullion coin market.”

Compared to 2013, sales in 2014 began low, with almost three million fewer silver Eagles sold in January, typically the best month for the coin.

The numbers picked up in conjunction with the falling price of silver, particularly during late March and September.

The best month for the silver Eagle in 2014 was October, where 5,790,000 were sold, about 2,700,000 more than 2013’s October sales. The number of orders for silver Eagles during that time was enough to run down the supply of the coin and force the Mint to begin allocating sales again.
