S.F. Old Mint bill advances

Legislation calling for the minting of gold $5 coins and silver dollars in 2006 commemorating the Old San Francisco Mint has met the threshold requirement for consideration by the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Domestic and International Monetary Policy, Trade and Technology. It has 292 co-sponsors, meeting the two-thirds requirements.

Introduced April 28 by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the bill has 291 other cosponsors.

It calls for striking up to 100,000 gold $5 coins and 500,000 silver dollars. Surcharges of $35 and $10 per coin, respectively, would go to the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society for the purposes of rehabilitating the Old Mint as a city museum and an American Coin and Gold Rush Museum.
