California Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Dianne Feinstein participated in a first-strike ceremony Oct. 27 for the San Francisco Old Mint commemorative silver dollar.

Held at the current San Francisco Mint, which has been in operation since 1937, dignitaries also included Gloria Eskridge, U.S. Mint associate director of Sales and Marketing; and Erik Christoffersen, executive director of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society.

The event was the ceremonial beginning of the striking of the silver dollars. The Old Mint commemorative program features proof and uncirculated silver dollars and proof and uncirculated $5 gold pieces.

Sales of the commemoratives began in the middle of August. The proof gold $5 coins bearing the ?S? mintmark are already being shipped out to buyers. The coins will be on sale until the end of this year.
