Rare Dahlonega in Heritage auction April 7-9

AuctionHerDahlA.jpg AuctionHerDahlB.jpgFrom a mintage of 3,477 pieces comes an 1858 Dahlonega dollar that will be offered in Heritage Auction Galleries? Signature Auction at the American Numismatic Association?s 2006 National Money Show in Atlanta.

The 1858-D gold $1, graded MS-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., is one of the featured pieces in the auction, to be held April 7-9 at Atlanta?s Cobb Galleria Centre.

?This is the only known die pairing of this truly memorable Dahlonega gold dollar,? said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auction Galleries, ?made even more remarkable when one considers that the 1858-D is one of the four or five rarest dates from this mint in high grades.?

?Presently there are about 50 Mint State examples certified by both services combined,? Rohan continued. ?However, a number of these are most likely resubmissions. This is, however, the finest-known example of this rare issue, and one that we are proud to present to the numismatic community.?

Another Dahlonega piece in the sale is an 1841-D $2.50, graded MS-63 by NGC.

?This coin, of Variety 2-D, represents a very rare die pairing,? said Rohan, ?as nearly all 1841-D quarter eagles are Variety 2-C, which features the mintmark leaning forward and partly left of the ?2?.?
