Rare WWII Fiji note headlines August event

World War II paper money aficionados need to check out Spink’s catalog for its Hong Kong Collectors’ sale scheduled for Aug. 8-9. On offer will be one of the great rarities of the war: a Government of Fiji overprint on a Reserve Bank of New Zealand £5 note (P-46b).

Very few of these notes survived the war and its aftermath. Schwan & Boling record just seven serial numbers in private and institutional collections. These seven include both 4K (P-46a) and 5K (P-46b) serial prefixes. A more recent compilation gives 10 confirmed, with two others possible.

That on offer comes graded aF and carries an estimate of HKD150,000-180,000 [USD19,000-23,000].

How times change. In the distant past, it once sold for $450.
