Princess Diana coins hot sellers

The 20th Anniversary of the death of Princess Diana continues to yield numismatic tributes. The latest come from Ascension Island courtesy of Pobjoy Mint. All bear a reverse design based on a single Princess Diana rose.

Three 38.6 mm versions of a one crown coin a have been issued. Top of the line is a 33.00 g .999 fine silver piece in which the rose has been engraved into a circular mother-of-pearl insert contained in the coin’s reverse. Mintage is 2107, of which 1,200 sold out immediately upon launch.

The same design is available struck directly into both a 20 g virenium flan and a piedfort containing 62.21 g .999 fine silver. (Virenium is a metallic alloy developed by Pobjoy in the 1970s consisting of 81 percent copper, 10 percent zinc and 9 percent nickel. It is similar to German or nickel silver.)

Mintages are 10,000 and 650, respectively.

A 1/2 crown piedfort struck in 1/2 oz .999 fine gold proved an instant sellout.
