PNG teams up with Houston

A Professional Numismatists Guild Day will be held Dec. 2, a day prior to the opening of the Dec. 3-5 Money Show of the Southwest sponsored by the Greater Houston Coin Club.

At this event, PNG members will hold their own bourse.

It is the first time that PNG has reached beyond the PNG Days held in conjunction with American Numismatic Association and Central States Numismatic Society conventions, and it is the first result of a partnership between the club and PNG to explore common interests.

“The coin club has built a very good show here and with the PNG’s support I believe that it could be one of those shows that rivals … an ANA, a FUN or a Baltimore,” said Paul Montgomery, PNG president.

“This seems to be a win-win situation for us and the PNG” said Edwin Johnston, GHCC president.

The idea of teaming up has taken a while to bring to fruition, Montgomery explained, and in fact, what added impetus to it was a direct conflict in dates between the Houston show and the PNG’s Dealer’s Deal in Las Vegas last year.

“Its actually been a pretty long process. It has taken several years and a lot of cups of coffee with some really great people,” Montgomery said Sept. 18, the day after he had met with the club’s board of directors.

“I think the opportunity is fantastic,” Montgomery said.

When asked if this was a way of building the PNG brand, Montgomery replied, “That’s exactly the way we look at it.”

Why choose Houston as the place to build this brand?

“Houston is the best kept secret in coins,” Montgomery said.

It is a close trip in from Dallas and San Antonio,” he said, declaring that it is “centrally located enough, where people will come, I believe, from literally all over the world.

Montgomery praised the work that the club has been doing to build the show.

“The Houston coin club has done a great job in recent years in locating the show downtown,” he said.

It is held at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

“The collecting public in Texas and the Southwest will ultimately be the winners,” Johnston, said.

Montgomery described that population base this way:

“Its a huge population, and it’s a wealthy population, and it’s a population of people that collect.”

He added that Texas is a business-friendly state.
