OCCC youth participate in Coin Week

The Ocean County Coin Club of New Jersey carried on its 20-year tradition of recognizing National Coin Week by holding a mini-show, exhibit display and youth treasure hunt April 15.

More than 60 visitors and 70 club members walked the bourse, the club reported.

“Our three-hour show on our regular Thursday meeting night does have an excellent draw and this year was no exception,” said OCCC President Dennis Berube. “We had 15 dealers along with six exhibits. The exhibits were by our YNs and they really highlighted the evening show.”

An exhibit titled, “Jamestown, Celebrated in Coins,” was judged the winner, according to YN Director Gary Catlin. “The six YN exhibitors each received national park collectors folders so they can begin collecting them when they appear in circulation,” he said.

Those who participated in the YN treasure hunt were eligible for 2010 Lincoln cents and explanatory folders provided by coin dealer Paul Hollis of Mandeville, La. Catlin was happy with the turnout.

“We had 21 participate and for a three-hour evening show, we were very pleased as it appeared we probably will add to our YN membership,” said Catlin.

YN member Alex Batchelor, 14, brought National Coin Week to his Beachwood, N.J., school by creating a display that was set up in the school library for the month of April.

The display included photos of key Lincoln cents and other rare coins, fun coin facts and information regarding the new America the Beautiful quarters. Available as handouts to other students were Batchelor’s articles on coin collecting, state quarter collector’s sleeves and a variety of bookmarks that were provided by the American Numismatic Association. He also included several books about coins that were available in the library.

Batchelor will be attending the ANA Summer Seminar in July along with two other OCCC YNs, Berube said.
