Northern Mariana quarter available

Quarter-dollar coins commemorating the Northern Mariana Islands, the sixth in the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program, are now available.

These quarters are offered in two-roll sets (40 coins per roll), one roll each from the United States Mint facilities at Philadelphia and Denver, as well as in bags of 100 and 1,000 coins
About 700,000 of the coins were released for circulation to the Federal Reserve Bank on Nov. 30.

“These coins are going to generate more positive awareness of the Northern Mariana Islands among the rest of the American public,” commented U.S. Rep. Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.
“Every time someone pulls one of these out their pocket they will be reminded that the Northern Marianas is beautiful and unique, and also just as much a part of this country as any other state or territory.”

The Congressman went to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia in October to inspect the design of the new coin and to participate in striking the quarters. Kilili toured the production floor with Plant Manager Marc Landry and met Phebe Hemphill, who sculpted the die used to cast the Northern Marianas quarter.

Those interested in purchasing bags or rolls of the Northern Marianas quarters may visit www.usmint.gov or call toll-free 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

An official Northern Mariana Islands quarter release event took place on Dec. 10 in Saipan.
