NGC attributes gold reeding variety

Wide and narrow reeding varieties have been identified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation on the edges of tenth-ounce gold American Eagle coins dated 2015.

The Wide Reeds version displays the standard size edge reeding seen on prior years’ coins, NGC graders noted. The Narrow Reeds style has much smaller and finer reeds that are more tightly spaced than those seen on prior issues.

This is the first time that a variation in reed sizes has been noted on the American Eagle bullion coin series, NGC said.

Relative rarity is not yet known, but early indications are the Wide Reeds variety is more abundant.

NGC  said submitters may request the “Wide Reeds” or “Narrow Reeds” attribution for 2015 $5 gold American Eagles on the NGC certification label by selecting VarietyPlus® on the NGC submission form. There is a $15 attribution fee for the VarietyPlus® service.

Release of the popular bullion coins began Jan. 5.
