New Philly expo slates two sales

A Stack’s auction will be among the highlights of the first Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo slated for Sept. 24-26 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

An official pre-expo auction will also be conducted by Bowers and Merena Sept. 22.

“Recognizing the special role Philadelphia has played in the numismatic history of our nation, Whitman Expo will be pulling out all of the stops to make this a special expo,” general manager David Crenshaw said.

Stack’s Americana sale, which is slated to begin Sept. 23, will feature a 1690 Massachusetts note and a series of medals from the American Revolution.

In the Bowers and Merena auction will be a selection of Colonial and early federal coinage.

Counterfeit coins from China will be the topic of an exhibit and two seminars each day to be conducted by Gregory DuBay. He will explain techniques to tell the fakes from genuine coins.

Other programs include the introduction of the a new Professional Edition of the Red Book.

Simon Codrington will offer “Security and Sensible Ideas to Protect Your Coins” and Mark Anderson addresses the topic of the “Society of Paper Money Collectors  Moves into the Future.”

A talk by Q. David Bowers is entitled, “Great Numismatists I’ve Met” and  Lawrence D. Shuffman will speak on “Philadelphia: How its Citizens Proudly Promoted the World War I Liberty Loan Bond.”
David Stitely will deal with “Collecting Fractional Currency.”

Actors portraying the historical figures Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Abigail Adams will be present.
