Funds given to it will be used to make acquisitions for the National Numismatic Collection.
Curator Karen Lee said, “We want to be able to more actively purchase coins.”
It is something that hasn’t been done since the 1970s and 1980s, she added.
She explained that she works with Jeff Garrett and he has pointed out gaps in the Morgan dollar collection. She says Doty was crazy about errors and she hopes more will come to the Smithsonian.
She also said that the existence of this fund should not discourage anyone who might want to donate actual coins to the Smithsonian.
Persons who would like to make a gift to the Richard G. Doty Acquisitions Fund may send checks to it in care of the National Museum of American History Smithsonian Institution, P.O. Box 37012, Room 5210, MRC 619, Washington, DC 20113-7012.
