Mint Stats: Silver bullion Eagles put in a slow week

As silver vaulted over the $30 mark to reach almost $31 a troy ounce, there was a noticeable drop in demand for bullion silver American Eagle coins. Just 100,000 more were purchased this week to bring the running total for August to 2,121,000. There is still a chance that the August number will surpass the sleepy July sales total of 2,278,000 in the final days of the month, but little chance of exceeding the August 2011 sales total of 3,679,500.

Today’s modern U.S. coins offer collectors an opportunity to amass a collection of beautiful coins at an affordable price.

There is an odd demand pattern developing in the bullion 2012 5-ounce coins. Often the newer designs of the year show lower sales figures than what are sported by the earlier designs, but the Acadia 5-ounce bullion coin sales of 15,100 are almost double the prior Chaco design. Of course, both designs are still available and numbers might eventually even out.

The Making American History set sold 2,979 more to hit a total of 33,878.
