Teenage drivers are well known for flooring the gas pedal and then hitting the brakes hard. Collectors have their own version of this behavior. Everyone tries to get their orders in first. Then they lose interest. It has happened again with the 2014 proof silver Eagle coin.
In just the first few days of availability collectors snared over 307,000 coins. In the following week, they purchased just 20,540 more. Wow. I don’t remember such a dramatic loss of momentum in such a short time.
Gold Eagle bullion coins are beginning February in similar fashion. There was significant demand in January followed by a sharp drop in the first days of February. Buffalo gold demand dropped, but not nearly as sharply.
The 2013 quarter and half-ounce proof gold American Eagle sales have ended. Both are under 5,000 pieces.
Civil Rights silver dollars added 5,047 proofs and 2,501 uncirculated pieces to the running sales totals.
