Mint Stats: Commemoratives get their turn

It might be said this week that collectors were buying like it was 1989. What do I mean by that? Simply that much of what action there was seemed to be focused on the year’s commemorative coin programs. I expect that to change with next week’s numbers as the 2012 proof silver Eagle initial sales figures will arrive.

Buyers grabbed 4,834 more proof Star-Spangled Banner dollars and 1,853 more of the uncirculated version. Both ongoing totals are catching up rapidly to the Infantry dollar numbers.

2013 U.S. Coin Digest

Everything you need for collecting U.S. coins is on this book.

The Defenders of Freedom set still has not hit the 50,000 sellout mark. Does that mean 50,000 is now too many to entice buyers to jump quickly into a set of this kind? Could be.

The sellout asterisk was placed on the Julia Grant proof First Spouse gold coin. Can the uncirculated version be far behind?
Authorized Purchasers of the Mint’s 5-ounce America the Beautiful silver bullion coins took 200 Chickasaw coins this week and that was it for this bullion coin series.

The popular 1-ounce silver Eagle bullion coin slowed to a 240,00 gain.
