Heritage exceeds $12.4 mil at ANA

402069007.jpg 402069007r.jpgIn a $12.4 million sale full of gold, it took an 1860 $20 piece to break the $200,000 barrier.

Graded Proof-64 Deep Cameo by Professional Coin Grading Service, the 1860 piece went for $201,250, serving as the high-water mark for Heritage Auction Galleries? official Atlanta American Numismatic Association Signature Auction.

In all, the April 6-7 sale realized $12,410,655, including the 15 percent buyer?s fee.?Three exceptional gold collections produced spirited bidding and several record prices,? noted Greg Rohan, president of Heritage. ?Judging by the prices realized, coins exhibiting both rarity and quality continue to perform superbly in the marketplace.?

The 1860 piece came from the Lake Highlands Collection, as did an 1881 $20, graded Proof-66 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., that fetched $184,000.

Two coins from the Jeffrey-Fisher-Duke?s Creek Collection of Dahlonega gold brought six figures, including an 1855-D gold $1 that realized $132,500. The coin was graded MS-64 by NGC. The other was an 1861-D gold $1, graded MS-65 by NGC, that brought in $138,000.

Checking in at $149,500 were a pair of coins: an 1864 $20, in NGC Proof-64 Cameo condition, and an 1854-D $3, graded MS-62 by NGC.

From the S.S. Central America treasure came a Justh & Hunter .891 fine gold ingot, weighing 60.64 ounces, that fetched $184,000. Among other ANA auction highlights was an 1879 $4 Flowing Hair, graded Proof-63 Deep Cameo by PCGS, that brought $161,000.

A total of 2,590 bidders participated in the auction, the 34th Heritage ANA auction.
