Gold glitters in Heritage sale

HerLib0228E.jpgExpected to be a featured item in Heritage Auction Galleries? upcoming Palm Beach Signature Auction is an 1848 $2.50 that?s considered quite rare.

?When David Akers cataloged this coin as part of the Pittman Collection, he noted that only three positively identified proofs were known to him,? said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage.

The auction, to be held March 2-3 at the Palm Beach Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., also includes a wide selection of American gold rarities.

The 1848 piece is graded Proof-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service.

Other rarities to be offered include a rare error coin, a 1822 25-cent/50-cent variety graded MS-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., and an 1880 $1 Goloid Metric dollar, in PCGS Proof-67 condition.
