Gold coins highlight Bowers Rarities Sale

595o.jpg 595r.jpgConsignments of U.S. gold coins from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries highlight Bowers and Merena?s first auction of the new year, the Rarities Sale.

Scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Loews Beverly Hills Hotel Los Angeles, the sale will be conducted in a single session beginning at 6 p.m. in the hotel?s screening room.

?We have a spectacular Rarities Sale planned for Beverly Hills,? stated Bowers and Merena president Steve Deeds. ?More than 600 lots of absolute and condition rarities will be crossing the auction block at the Loews Beverly Hills.?

Individual items of note include a proof-only 1876 $3, graded Proof-65 by Professional Coin Grading Service.

An 1814/3 Capped Head half eagle certified MS-61 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., is included in the sale, along with a 1930-S Indian eagle graded PCGS MS-64.  ?We are also delighted to be offering several important rarities from the U.S. minor and silver-coin series in our February Beverly Hills sale,? said Bowers and Merena director of numismatics Jeff Ambio.

?Of special importance among these highlights is a seldom-offered 1857 Flying Eagle (cent) in NGC Proof-64, an elusive specimen-striking of the 1831 Capped Bust dime that NGC has certified as Proof-63, a key-date 1896-S Barber quarter in NGC MS-65, and a simply breathtaking 1917-S reverse mintmark Walking Liberty half dollar that has been certified MS-67 at NGC. The final coin is currently a pop 1/0 example at both major grading services.?

Additional highlights include: an 1872 Indian cent, PCGS MS-66 RB; an 1866 Shield nickel, NGC Proof-67; a 1918-D Buffalo nickel, PCGS MS-66; and an 1807 Draped Bust dime, NGC MS-65.

Other items of interest include an 1828 Capped Bust quarter, graded NGC MS-65; a 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter, in NGC AU-55 condition; and a 1932-D Washington quarter, graded PCGS MS-65.
