Bernie Watts, a Colorado businessman forced to sell his collection of San Francisco gold coins to save his company in 2001, was the winner of a 1914-S Saint-Gaudens double eagle in a random drawing among new members of the American Numismatic Association.
The coin, graded NGC MS-63, was presented to Watts Aug. 20 by Jay Beeton and Kim Kiick during the ANA Member Appreciation Day at ANA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo.
New ANA members can save $36 on initial dues in an ANA member recruitment program funded by Rare Coin Wholesalers. The Dana Point, Calif., company is paying the second year of dues when new members apply for a one-year membership.
