Gold coin drawing benefits clubs

The Numismatic Association of Southern California (NASC) will celebrate the 35 anniversary of the Club Member Gold Benefit Drawing by giving away 35 gold coins at its Aug. 24-25 Annual Convention and Coin Show to be held at the Masonic Center in Arcadia, Calif.

The Club Member Gold Benefit Drawing was the brainchild of Presidents Myron McClaflin and Raymond Reinoehl as a way for NASC to help its member clubs raise funds to sustain their activities. For each book of tickets sold, the club got to keep 50 percent of the income. For the first year the clubs collectively added to their treasuries $5,200. Due to the rise in the price of gold, the drawing has reduced the number of coins to 25 and has had to supplement with some silver Eagles.

This new edition of the Standard Catalog of® World Gold Coins is 1,439 pages of more than 400 years of gold coins, from every region of the world.

To re-energize the program and to help member clubs, NASC voted to go back to the future with 35 gold coins for this year’s drawing. The drawing has been renamed: “The Nona G. Moore 35th Member Club Benefit Drawing” with a portion of the proceeds going into the junior/education funds. Nona Moore was a dealer, past president of NASC and long time champion of both the gold drawing and junior activities.

The gold coins will range from 2 peso gold pieces up to a U.S. $10 gold coin. The final mix of gold coins is still being finalized.

“I expect we will have close to $5,000 worth of gold coins, depending on gold’s price, in this year’s drawing,” said Committee Chairman Harold Katzman.

NASC President, Alex Jaramillo notes, “This is a tremendous opportunity for clubs to earn some funds to bolster their activities”. If your Club is not a member of NASC, now is the time to join and earn some funds to support your activities.

The Numismatic Association of Southern California was founded over 50 years ago and has been a long time member of the ANA. It is the second largest regional numismatic organization in California.
