Rolls of Franklin Pierce Presidential dollars hit the Mint Statistics pages this week. Sales began at a fairly high level, already equaling two-thirds of the totals of the prior issue. The Lincoln issue will probably generate higher numbers later this year, but for now Pierce numbers are in the spotlight in a positive way.

Gold and silver bullion coins continue to be in the headlines, but the irony is they are not collector issues sold by the Mint to collectors. High sales numbers initially are a proxy for the anxiety level of the world’s investors, especially at this time of year. Collectors do buy the bullion American Eagles on the secondary market, but usually they do so early in the year.

What they aren’t buying lately in any quantity are Boy Scout dollars. The reconciliation process took the uncirculated total down by another 191 while proof sales rose by 2,381 pieces, leaving 5,039 proofs left to sell. Disabled Vet sales were even lower.
