France starts 2019 program

On Sept. 5, Aurélien Rousseau, Président-directeur général de Monnaie de Paris, launched the mint’s 2019 program.

Heading the announcement and #1 item in MdP’s “Histoire de l’humanité” series was the news that a commemorative will be struck to mark the 50th anniversary of “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” That’s the one that took place on July 20, 1969. The media release makes specific reference to: “Les 3 astronautes: Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin.”

A second coin in this series will mark the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

And next year it is the turn of Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie to be celebrated as one of the mint’s “Les femmes qui ont marqué l’histoire.”

Since 2014, a series of commemoratives have paid homage to historic French coins. The 2019 issue will salute the Franc germinal of 1803 – named after the month Germinal in the revolutionary calendar. This was the gold franc that contained 290.034 mg of gold and circulated alongside silver coins on a basis of 1:15.5 until 1864.
