Early streetcar shines on transportation ticket

By Neil Shafer

Have a look at how one of the California Street Cable Railroad Co.’s streetcars looked in 1898, the date this company check for $4.90 was written.

The rendition shows great detail even though the check is only lithographed. It is from the Spanish-American war period, when two-cent revenue stamps were affixed to the back of each check to help pay for that short-lived conflict.

There is also a 1937 ticket illustrated from this very same company.
