CSNA symposium to hit San Diego

The California State Numismatic Association has chosen San Diego to host its 42nd annual Educational Symposium. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 20 at the Holiday Inn Mission Valley/Stadium. The program is free and open to all collectors.

Experts will speak on topics that will reach the interests of coin, currency and medal collectors. A question-and-answer period will follow each presentation.

From 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Michael Shaw will present “Coins and Medals of British India.” From 11 a.m. to noon, Dr. Michael Wehner will present “Tokens and Medals of the Wild West.”

From 1:30 to 4 p.m., a panel of three prominent coins dealers will discuss issues relating to the business of selling and auctioning coins that every collector and investor should know. Speakers are Barry Stuppler of Barry Stuppler, Inc. and former American Numismatic Association president; Richard Ponterio, consignment director of Ponterio & Associates, Bowers & Merena Auctions; and local coin dealer Ted Koopman of Ted’s Coins.

Among the topics of discussion will be:

• Buying coins as a collector or investor
• Selling coins to a dealer
• Selling coins in auctions
• Coin shows
• The professional coin dealer versus
dealers who buy and sell coins through ads in various publications
• The importance of grading
• The value of having coins certified
• Coin scams to beware of today
• Counterfeits and alterations in general
• The impact of Chinese-made
counterfeits
• The current status of the coin
collecting market
•What’s hot and what’s not

A few seats may still available for an on-site catered luncheon with the program speakers. Cost is $16. Parking at the event is free.
