The California State Numismatic Association Library has a new home. Effective September 2010, the library is now housed at the Vallejo, Calif., Naval and Historical Museum.

CSNA says its library is among the largest and oldest numismatic libraries and includes references not found in the American Numismatic Association library.

“With over a thousand volumes and many older long out of print books, as well as an active library going back over five decades, the CSNA Library for the first time is not housed in some back bedroom or basement but in a public place and readily available to our association’s members and fellow coin hobbyists,” said Michael S. Turrini, outgoing CSNA president and newly named librarian.

“Ruth M. Phillips, the previous librarian, spent several years revising … the library, and her work is evident in the excellent order and arrangement,” said Turrini. “The library’s key asset is not circulating or borrowing, it is a treasure for numismatic research.”

While the library is now available, there are still several hundred more books to be added to the catalog, which is posted on CSNA’s website, www.calcoin.org. Donations of other references will be gradually included.

The library is located on the mezzanine level of the museum and is currently open on Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. Effective January 2011, standard library hours will be Tuesdays from noon to 2 p.m. and every second Saturday from 1-3 p.m. with exceptions for holidays and large museum events. Library users will not be charged the museum’s public admittance fee.
