Code Talkers medals given nod

Designs for two more gold medals that will honor World War II Code Talkers were recommended by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee when it met recently.

Deferring to the designs preferred by the Pueblo of Laguna Tribe Code Talkers, the CCAC endorsed obverse design 2a, which depicts a WWII code talker crouching with a rifle and phone, and reverse design 5, which features the dancing eagle from the tribe seal and inscriptions.

Designs for the gold medal honoring the Akwesasne Mohawk Code Talkers endorsed by the CCAC feature an obverse that depicts a code talker and incorporates the Mohawk Tribe clans and a reverse that features a Mohawk wearing the kustowa headdress.

Code Talkers were members of American Indian tribes who use their native languages to send coded messages to assist U.S. armed forces during World War I and World War II. Each of the 33 tribes will receive a gold medal, with individual code talkers or their next of kin receiving silver medals.
