Charbneau So-Called Dollar book available

Jeff Shevlin and William D. Hyder examine Jules Charbneau’s gold dollars in their new book, Discover the World of Charbneau Dollars: an Illustrated Reference.

The authors examine the history, art and architecture of the Golden Gate International Exposition that inspired Jules Charbneau’s design. Charbneau’s life story and his earlier entry into numismatic history designing the souvenir medals struck for the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909 follow to give the reader a broader scope of his career and legacy.

The heart of the book is Shevlin’s analysis of the 13 known varieties of the Charbneau dollar. Each variety is accompanied by images of each medal, enlarged 14 times the actual 12mm diameter of the medals.

Medal specialist D. Wayne Johnson says in the book’s preface, “This is a delightful story about the artist, the event and the highly collectible little numismatic items. Call them dollars, or call them medals, you are extremely fortunate if you own even one of Charbneau’s creations.”

The book can be ordered from So-Called Books of Carmichael, Calif.
