Binion rarity leads FUN auction

This PCGS Gem New 65-graded ex-Binion Hoard 1934 $10,000 went for $158,675 in Heritage Auctions’ sale at the FUN show.

A 1934 $5,000, Fr. 2221-G, graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ sold for $146,875.

An ex-Binion’s Hoard New York $10,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2231-B, was the star of Heritage Auctions’ Signature Currency Auction, Jan. 6, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The rarity, graded PCGS Gem New 65, sold for $158,625 as part of the firm’s sale in conjunction with the Florida United Numismatists convention.

All prices include the 17.5 percent buyer’s premium.

Taking second among the lot leaders was a $5,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2221-G, in PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ. It brought $146,875.

Bringing slightly less, at $141,000, was a 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2231-A, in PMG About Uncirculated 55. It was a newly reported note and was part of the Dr. A. Wayne Schmalhausen Collection.

Also from that collection was a $5,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2221-K, in PMG Choice About Unc 58. Listed as “a wonderful survivor from a print run that only included 2,400 pieces,” it went for $123,375.

Another 1934 Federal Reserve Note fell slightly below the $100,000 mark, bringing $99,875. This Fr. 2231-G $10,000 in PMG About Uncirculated 50 was of a serial number new to the census and “stands out as the finest example to be offered in at least a decade.”

An original Bechtel album of Confederate notes, including rare Montgomery issues, went for $99,875.

Other top lots were:

• 1918 $1,000 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 1133-A, PMG Very Fine 30, $51,700.

• 1863 $100 Interest Bearing Note face proof, Hessler HX-138D, PMG Choice Uncirculated 63, $47,000.

• 1873 $20 The First National Gold Bank of Stockton, Calif., charter 2077, Fr. 1155, PMG Very Fine 20 Net, $47,000.

• 1891 $100 Silver Certificate, Fr. 344, PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30, $39,950.

• 1861 $1,000 Interest Bearing Note face proof, Hessler HX-129J, PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58, $37,600.

• 1869 $50 Legal Tender Note, Fr. 151, PMG Very Fine 25, $37,600.

• 1882 $100 Brown Back The Fourth Street National Bank, charter 3557, Fr. 522, PMG About Uncirculated 50 EPQ, $32,900.
