Another Roosevelt dime with doubled lips discovered

A 1953-S dime with nice hub doubling of Roosevelt’s lips has been reported by Calvin Goddard of California. Goddard found this coin in his collection after reading the Jan. 6 Numismatic News story about the find of a 1964-D doubled die dime with strong doubling on the lips.

Goddard also found a doubled die on the lips of a 1955-S dime, but did not send it saying it was too minor. He suspected they would be easy to find but was unable to find any others.

Doubling on the 1953-S can be seen on Roosevelt’s profile; the lips, nose, forehead and eyebrow.

The arrow within the bridge of Roosevelt’s nose points to what may be a good marker (possibly a clash mark) in identifying this variety at least in this stage (it is in a late die state). Another strong marker is found on the reverse in the form of a die gouge running through the “C” to the “A” of AMERICA.

Three additional 1964-D doubled die dimes were found in government issued mint sets, suggesting that they are in “time capsules of safe storage” waiting for folks to pluck them from sets.

The finder of these latest three 1964-D dimes, Barry Haley of Texas, looked through over 200 rolls of 1964-D dimes, more than 150 1964 proof sets and 91 mint sets.

On the reverse a helpful die marker appears in the letter “C.”

He said that all the doubled dies were in the mint sets also noting that he found a few on the 1964 Philadelphia issues in the mint sets.

The 1964-D dimes were nicknamed “Hot Lips.” More about the hubbing process and how it can create doubled dies can be found in the Jan. 6 article on the original 1964-D find.
