AINA medal features Sylvia Haffner Magnus

AINA MedalSylvia Haffner Magnus is featured on the 2014 medal of the American Israel Numismatic Association.

All Life Members and paid-up AINA 2014 members will receive a free medal honoring Sylvia Haffner Magnus, the “First Lady of Modern Israel Numismatics.” The obverse was designed by Paul Conner, and the reverse AINA logo was created by Nathan Sobel.

While living in California, Magnus authored the ground-breaking reference History of Modern Israel’s Money from 1917 to 1967. This book included the coins and currency issued under the British Mandate of Palestine. She was awarded the American Numismatic Association’s Heath Literary Award in recognition of her exceptional work.

Magnus lived in Israel for several years where she did the research for Judaic Tokens and Medals, which was published by AINA in 1978 (edited by Nathan Sobel). The reference was the culmination of her efforts to list and photograph kibbutz scrip, merchant and co-operative tokens, city and municipality medals, Masonic and Arab medals and tokens, etc. She also served on the AINA board and wrote numerous articles over the years that appeared in the Shekel.

AINA dues of $25 for U.S. or Israel, or $35 for other countries can be mailed to AINA, P.O. Box 20255, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269 or call (818) 225-1348 for credit cards. The Sylvia Haffner Magnus medals are also available separately for $5 each postpaid.
