90,000 Buffaloes purchased

In less than two weeks, 90,000 2010 one-ounce gold Buffalo bullion coins have been purchased from the U.S. Mint by its authorized purchaser network.

The bullion coin first became available April 29.

Buffaloes are made of 24 karat gold as opposed to the 22 karat fineness of the American Eagle gold bullion coin. It was designed to appeal to Far Eastern buyers who prefer pure gold.

Collectors will get their first crack at a Buffalo when the proof version goes on sale June 3. Price was not set by press time, but will fluctuate with the price of gold bullion as other new U.S. gold issues do.

The price of gold bullion has been pushed up to record levels by buyers concerned about the financial crisis in Europe.
