300th named Ambassador dies

Numismatic Ambassador William J. Grant died Feb. 11 of cancer.

Mr. Grant had been holder of the award since 1999 when he was given it Aug. 28 at the Golden State Coin Show in Arcadia, Calif.

He was given the award by Al and Dorothy Baber, who were acting on behalf of Numismatic News, sponsor of the award.

It was noted at the time that Grant received the 300th Ambassador Award. The first one was given in 1974.

Mr. Grant was active in numismatics for over 40 years. Most recently he was the Honorary General Chairman of the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Los Angeles in August 2009.

In his long hobby career, he was noted as an award-winning exhibitor, an ANA-certified judge, a speaker and author.

He served in many elective and appointive posts in Southern California coin organizations.

He was also an ANA club representative and district delegate.
