An 1870-S Seated Liberty dollar, the Farouk-Schultz specimen, will be auctioned in Bowers and Merena Auctions? Feb. 28-March 1 sale at the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention.
The dollar has been graded VF-25 by Professional Coin Grading Service.
?For the 1870-S Seated Liberty silver dollar, only nine specimens have been auctioned to date and just three more are rumored to exist,? said Steve Deeds, president of B&M. ?Without question this is one of the rarest U.S. coins ever struck for circulation.?
Also notable in the U.S. portion of B&M?s 3,220-lot auction is the Dan McClure collection?s Registry Set of gold commemoratives, consisting of the 11-piece 1903-1926 set of circulation strikes. McClure?s set, listed as ?Deep 2? with PCGS, is ranked second among both the Current and All Time Finest Collections and is listed on the PCGS.com Web site. It will be auctioned as individual lots.
Among other U.S. coin highlights is a 1937-D three-legged Buffalo nickel, FS-020.2, graded MS-66 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., as well as an 1867 Shield nickel with rays in PCGS Proof-64.
A 1794 Flowing Hair half dime, NGC MS-67, is joined by a 1794 Flowing Hair half dollar, O-106, PCGS AU-58. An 1806 Draped Bust half dollar, O-116, pointed 6, NGC MS-65*, will also cross the block.
Silver dollars include a proof 1884 Morgan, NGC Proof-68* Ultra Cameo.
For fans of $3 gold pieces, a proof 1864 is offered in NGC Proof-66 Cameo. Also featured among gold coins is a 1910-S Indian $10 gold piece, NGC MS-66.
Double eagles include a 1908-S Saint-Gaudens gold $20, PCGS MS-66, and a proof 1910 Saint-Gaudens $20, NGC Proof-66.
An 1879 gold $4 Flowing Hair ?Stella pattern, Judd 1635, Pollock 1832/1833, PCGS Proof-62, is also up for bids.
Territorial gold is represented by an 1855 Wass, Molitor & Co. $50 gold piece, Kagin 9, NGC AU-50.
Octagonal and round gold $50s from the Panama-Pacific Exposition will be on offer. The 1915-S $50 round is graded NGC MS-66 while the octagonal is graded NGC MS-64.
The sale also features U.S. paper money and world coins.
