A pattern 1879 “Washlady” silver dollar sold for $161,000 to top the Heritage Auctions Coinfest Signature sale.

Overall, the U.S. coin auction realized $9.42 million at the Stamford, Conn., event Oct. 27-30.

The Judd-1603, Pollock-1798, pattern was assigned Proof-66+ grade by the Numismatic Guaranty Corp. and it holds a  High R.6 rarity ranking.

Between 12 and 15 examples are believed known of the Washlady dollar in both copper and silver, Heritage notes. There is also one example known in white metal.

“These results are 20 percent higher than our pre-sale projections,” said Greg Rohan, Heritage president, of the overall auction results.

Selling for $115,000 was a 1785 African Head Connecticut copper.It graded NGC VF-30. This piece came from W. Philip Keller Collection.

Next up was an 1882 Liberty Head gold $20. It realized $80,500. The Professional Coin Grading Service called it AU-53.

“The 1882 is the absolute lowest-mintage of them all, at 571 coins. Any representative of this issue, in any grade, is an extraordinary rarity,” Rohan said in comparing the coin to other scarce pieces in the Liberty Head $20 series.

Bringing $74,750 was a 1904 Liberty Head $20 graded PCGS Proof-65 Cameo.

The same price was achieved by the finest known 1879 $1 Metric pattern dollar, Judd-1622, Pollock-1818, Low R.7. It was graded Proof-68 Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Corp.

Selling for $63,250 was an 1896 gold $10 graded Proof-66 by PCGS with CAC sticker.

An 1861-O gold $20 graded PCGS AU-53 with CAC sticker brought $54,625.

An 18th century rarity, a  1796 50C with 16 Stars, graded PCGS Fine-12 PCGS Secure. The O-102 variety, High R.5, went for $52,900.

A Roman Finish 1909 $5 gold piece graded  NGC Proof-67 NGC sold for $51,750.
