Standard Catalog of World Paper Money Modern Issues, 1961-Present New Edition Now Available

IOLA, Wis. (May 18, 2009) -- Frequent changes in the design of currency and a growing number of countries forgoing old notes for new currency systems is resulting in greater emphasis on accurate identification of bank note issues for collectors. While there is certainly a market for obsolete notes, it’s a different story if you’re actively seeking it out, versus finding out after the fact that the value you thought you had is far from accurate. This is just one area of paper money collecting where the new edition of the Standard Catalog of® World Paper Money Modern Issues, 1961-Present can make a difference.
As the largest and most comprehensive English language guide to world bank notes issued between 1961 to the present, this 1,112-page book (available now from Krause Publications) serves a segment of the numismatic hobby which continues to grow in popularity and market activity. This 15th edition features new listings and items that reflect recent developments and new varieties and discoveries. The release of new European Union issues, and upward market movement of segments such as early Queen Elizabeth II notes, high-grade early issues of African nations and Australian issues are all reflected in the details and listings of this comprehensive catalog. In addition, readers also will find numerous previously unlisted Specimen issues.
This new edition also includes a free CD featuring the complete contents of the book, in an easy-to-search PDF format which also allows readers to enlarge pages by 400%. A great tool for close-up inspection of notes and easier viewing of listings, the CD also provides another resource option for collectors and dealers during shows and while researching the Web for auctions. The CD is also available for purchase separately.
With more than 19,000 variety listings, pricing in three condition grades, 12,000 illustrations of bank notes and several appendices to assist with conversion and grading, this is the one stop resource to the modern paper money market.

Strike It Rich With Pocket Change, Second Edition Now Available
IOLA, Wis. (March 19, 2009) -- Error coin experts Brian Allen and Ken Potter are back with a new edition of Strike It Rich with Pocket Change, the premier guide to spotting, collecting, and enjoying the world of error and variety coins.
“Have you ever knowingly spent $100 on a candy bar or $50 on a soft-drink? As ludicrous as the concept sounds, there is no doubt that you have unintentionally done this numerous time without knowing it,” is how authors Brian Allen and Ken Potter begin the new edition of Strike It Rich with Pocket Change, now available from Krause Publications. As more collectors and general coin enthusiasts are drawn to the treasure-hunt appeal of error and variety coins, interest in everyday coins is increasing as people take a closer look at the change in their pocket.
The U.S. Mint’s popular state quarter program and introduction of new nickels and a new dollar coin series has produced new discoveries, while demand for changes in U.S. coinage has generated greater attention and interest from the public. Thus the need for an updated version of this book, which helps make sense of it all and gives greater meaning to phrases including “double die,” “double edge-lettering” “trails,” “clashed die” and “die dents.”
In this new edition of Strike It Rich with Pocket Change readers learn about the different types of errors and how to spot them in varying types of coins, using the unique and useful combination of more than 350 close-up photos comparing properly minted coins with their error counterparts and identifying details featured. In addition, the authors’ insights help dispel common myths about error and variety coins.
Among the coins included in the listings are Lincoln Memorial cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, John F. Kennedy half dollars, and state quarters. While the listings focus on the more valuable rare coins, the principles discussed throughout this book can be applied when researching and inspecting any coin for possible errors.
Between the photos, advice and descriptions in this book readers can’t help but gain an edge in becoming skilled error spotters.

An international panel made the selection from hundreds of entries of 2007 dated coins during a final round of balloting that concluded in mid January.
Other countries winning awards in the competition were Hungary, Belarus, the United States, Austria, the British Virgin Islands, Denmark, Italy and Mongolia.
The awards will be presented Feb. 7, 2009 in a special ceremony at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany, by David C. Harper on behalf of Krause Publications, World Coin News and the website

“The judges had to be drawn to the eyes of the wolverine,” Harper said of the winning coin. “They are quite compelling.”
“Congratulations to the National Bank of Mongolia for capturing the Coin of the Year Award with its innovative offering,” said Scott Tappa, numismatics publisher of World Coin News. “The diamond eyes of the wolverine depicted on the 500-tugrik coin certainly captivated the interest of our esteemed panel of judges. That Mongolia’s entry distinguished itself from such a strong field is a testament
to its creative design and production.”
Winner of the Most Historically Significant Coin honor was a silver dollar struck by the U.S. Mint to mark the 400th anniversary of the 1607 Jamestown settlement in Virginia.
The Best Contemporary Event coin, which commemorates an event that occurred less than 100 years ago, was also taken by a U.S. silver dollar commemorating the racial desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957. The contest, sponsored by World Coin News, is in its 25th year of honoring the mints of the world that produce the most artistic, historically relevant and innovative coinage.

"We have always cared about what average collectors think about new coinissues, and we here at World Coin News believe this added public element will augment the prestige of the COTY Award," said Harper.
The COTY will be determined by a panel of mint officials, museum curators, medalists, numismatic experts and journalists.
Last year's Coin of the Year winner was the U.S. Mint for its coin celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps. IOLA, Wis. (Aug. 16, 2007) — The 2007 Coin of the Year Award was captured by the United States Marine Corps 230th anniversary silver dollar dated 2005.
An international panel judged it the top issue in a field of 10 category-winning coins struck in 2005. The competition, which included two rounds of voting, is sponsored by World Coin News.
The winner was announced by Numismatic News publisher William A. Bright.
The Marine dollar was recognized in a special award presentation to the U.S. Mint on Aug. 8 at the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money in Milwaukee, Wis.
In the first round of balloting, the United States had won in three categories with three different coins.
The Marine Corps dollar, KM-376, won in the Best Crown category. The Oregon state quarter in copper-nickel clad alloy, KM-372, was named Best Trade Coin. Most Popular Coin honors went to the copper-nickel American Bison five-cent piece, KM-368.
However, Australia's 2005 "Dancing Man" silver $1 coin marking the end of World War II topped two categories in the first round, the only entry to do so. The "Dancing Man" was the top vote getter as Best Contemporary Event Coin and Most Innovative Coinage Concept. For the latter category, the judges were impressed by the fact that the man does a full circle as the coin is moved. The $1 coin is KM-747a.
Germany was also powerfully positioned with two category winners in the first round of voting. Taking the top place in the category of Most Historically Significant Coin was Germany's silver 10 euro commemorating the 100th anniversary of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity. It is KM-238. Germany also won the top place for Best Gold Coin. This time it was a 100-euro coin for the World Cup Soccer tournament hosted there in 2006. The coin is KM-237.
The other three category winners were Austria, Belarus and Israel.
Austria's 20-euro depicting the ship S.M.S. Saint George won the voting in the Best Silver coin category. It is KM-3127. Topping the Most Artistic Coin category was a silver 20-rubles from Belarus. The coin depicts an Easter egg. It is KM-99. A 2 new sheqalim of Israel struck in silver, honoring Moses and the 10 Commandments won the voting for Most Inspirational Coin. It is KM-400.
The Coin of the Year Award was created by World Coin News to encourage and honor creativity in the coinage issues of the mints of the world. It was first given in 1984 for 1982-dated coinage.
The first winner was the George Washington commemorative half dollar, which was the first commemorative struck by the United States since 1954.
There is a built-in delay for nomination and consideration of coin issues because not every nation issues coinage in the year of the date on the coin.
KM numbers are Krause-Mishler numbers, which is the internationally recognized identification system for the world's coins that is used in the Standard Catalog of World Coins series of reference books published by Krause Publications.

IOLA, Wis. (Aug. 27, 2007) — President and Master of the Austrian Mint Dietmar Spranz was given a Numismatic News Numismatic Ambassador Award Aug. 8 during a dinner sponsored by the mint at the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Milwaukee, Wis.
Making the presentation was editor David C. Harper.
Spranz began collecting coins when he was 12 years old and took a job at the Central Bank of Austria when he was 14, continuing to study as he worked. He worked his way up and is now on the verge of retirement, but not before being recognized for his significant contributions to the introduction of the euro to the dozen European Union members that first adopted it in 1999.
The logistics of introducing a whole new currency physically in 2002 and retiring all of the old coins and notes were daunting, Harper noted, and Spranz helped make it happen.
Spranz is “a board member and head of the collector coin sub-group of the Mint Directors Working Group in Brussels, which coordinates all European mints in euro decision making,” Harper said.
IOLA, Wis. (Aug. 16, 2007) — Numismatic News Editor David C. Harper was recently awarded the Burnett Anderson Memorial Award for Excellence in Numismatic Writing. The award was bestowed by the American Numismatic Association during its annual awards banquet Aug. 11 at the World's Fair of Money in Milwaukee.
The award holds special significance to Harper because he worked with Burnett Anderson for almost 18 years when Anderson served as the Numismatic News Washington, D.C., correspondent and Harper was on the NN staff.
"I am a better editor for having known and worked with Burnett," Harper said.
Harper has been a coin collector since 1963, when he began filling a Whitman album with Lincoln cents. He caught the tail end of the circulation finds era and he augmented his sets with purchases paid for from paper route earnings.
Inspired to write in part by Q. David Bowers' book, "Coins and Collectors," he entered and won the monthly Coins magazine "What's the Story" contest when he was 15 years old. His first bylined numismatic article appeared in the June 1971 issue as a result. He entered the contest so often and won often enough that the rules were changed to prohibit new submissions for a two-year period after winning.
"My free subscriptions were still running when Krause hired me," he joked. "Perhaps they wanted to save money."
He joined the Krause Publications editorial staff in 1978 and is currently editor of Numismatic News and World Coin News and executive editor of Bank Note Reporter. He also edits two books annually, North American Coins & Prices and U.S. Coin Digest. He is the author of the "Class of '63" column that runs each week in Numismatic News.
His various Krause Publications assignments included a stint as editor of Coins magazine 1980-1983.
Harper received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1977. He had a double major of journalism and economics.
"I first met Burnett Anderson when Krause hired him to be the firm's Washington correspondent in 1981. I learned a lot from him. I enjoyed working with him. He was a great storyteller and a stickler for accuracy. That is the heart of journalism. It is a special honor to receive the numismatic writing award that carries his name," Harper said.
Harper’s stories and blogs can be read at www.numismaster.com, Krause Publications’ web portal for coin and paper money values, news, and events.
IOLA, Wis. (Aug. 31, 2007) — Lisa Bellavin has joined the Numismatics staff of Krause Publications in an online editor role
Bellavin will work producing audio, video, and other multimedia content for the group’s web properties, most notably NumisMaster.com. She will also work with the world’s mints to ensure their products are represented in Krause Publications’ offerings, and help coordinate the company’s Coin of the Year Award.
Bellavin is currently in her last semester of study at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, majoring in Communications and Anthropology. Prior to joining Krause Publications, Bellavin worked as a reporter and intern for the Stevens Point Journal, and as a morning radio host for 90FM Radio. Her numismatic interests include the symbolic meanings of ancient world coins, as well as new coin production technology.
She can be reached via email at lisa.bellavin@fwpubs.com.
IOLA, Wis. (Aug. 30, 2007) — Maggie Pahl has joined the Numismatics staff of Krause Publications in an associate editor role.
Pahl will work producing Numismatic News, World Coin News, and Bank Note Reporter magazines. In addition, she will also be working on the weekly Numismatic eNewsletter, the group’s website, and the NumisMaster.com coin news, event, and pricing portal.
Pahl grew up in central Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where she received a degree in Teaching Communication Arts and Literature. She joined Krause Publications in August of 2006 as a member of the Proofreading department. She enjoys reading, writing, hiking, camping, kayaking and crocheting.
IOLA, Wis. (Aug. 30, 2007) — Founder of Numismatic News Chester L. Krause was given the paper’s highest honor, the Numismatic Ambassador Award, Aug. 9 during the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money in Milwaukee, Wis.
The presentation occurred during the annual Numismatic Ambassador Breakfast, an annual event that all award holders and their guests are welcome to attend.
Krause was given the award by Numismatic News editor David C. Harper, because, as he said, Krause set in motion a chain of events on Oct. 13, 1952, when he founded the paper. Harper said that chain of events touched him as it did everyone in the room.
The Ambassador Award was created in 1974 and for obvious reasons was not bestowed on Krause until now, long after he has retired.
Reaction to the presentation was enthusiastic applause by those assembled.
Harper said afterward that “everybody in the room knows Chet Krause, respects Chet Krause and couldn’t be happier to see him finally get the award for his many hobby achievements.”

The Krause Publications numismatics group was out in full force Aug. 6-12 in Milwaukee for the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money, asserting its leadership role in the coin and paper money collecting hobbies. A contingent believed to be the largest ever from Iola attending a single show made the trip to Milwaukee, and attendees took notice.
“Our staff performed like a well-oiled machine in Milwaukee,” said
Numismatic News editor Dave Harper. “All of us heard positive comments from attendees about the ‘New Krause’ look. Our expanded booth, uniform staff appearance, long-standing sponsored functions and new hospitality events created their own buzz on the bourse floor. Our well-known magazines and books were there, but new products like NumisMaster, video and price guides on DVD were in the spotlight.”
Among the group’s accomplishments at the show:
-Harper received a lifetime achievement award for his numismatic journalism, and book editor George Cuhaj was honored for his work on the Standard Catalog of U.S. Paper Money. Recent retiree Fred Borgmann, a 30-year KP employee, was honored with a reception in the numismatics booth, which also hosted a 55th birthday party for Numismatic News.
-Harper presided over presentation of the Coin of the Year Awards, sponsored by World Coin News, with awards going to mints from Austria, Germany, Australia, Belarus, Israel, and the U.S. Harper was also master of ceremonies for the Numismatic Ambassador breakfast, where he honored KP founder Chet Krause for his contributions to the grassroots level of coin collecting.
-Harper was the first in the numismatic press to break the big news story of the week: the ANA’s executive director was placed on administrative leave Sunday morning. Working with Dave Kranz and Debbie Bradley, Harper had stories posted to www.numismaticnews.net and NumisMaster by early afternoon; a subsequent e-blast Monday made the story the most-read in NumisMaster history.
Numismatic editors Harper, Kranz, and Bob Van Ryzin were everywhere on the bourse floor, at seminars, in meetings, and at press conferences, often with Lisa Bellavin and Scott Tappa in tow recording the proceedings on video.
-Sales staff Sue Konkel, Robbie Cain, Debbie Tischendorf, GayLynn Holcomb, Dennis Piotrowski, and Dean Listle made the most of their time with customers on the bourse floor. A special treat came Wednesday evening, when staff hosted a select group of customers to a lively dinner at the Chop House restaurant. Highlights included an appearance from former professional wrestler Hillbilly Jim and the magic of Chad Long, who impressed customers and show-goers with his illusions and humor. David Steward, Colin Ungaro, and Suzanne Mitchell took the opportunity to better acquaint themselves with the industry
-In the booth, Beth Grimsley, Tom Michael, Katy Gertz, Jana Tappa, and Bradley helped promote and demonstrate
NumisMaster, which was making its first full-fledged appearance at the World’s Fair of Money. Tappa, Gertz, and Sara Wait also designed ads for customers onsite.
-On the book side, Toni Rahn, Brenda Mazemke, and Corinne Zielke were busy fielding sales requests for KP’s extensive line of coin and paper money books. Another similar new feature that drew considerable interest from buyers: price guides on DVD.
-The numismatics group was not finished with the show’s closing on Sunday. A group of about 60 hobbyists loaded buses in Milwaukee, stopped in Appleton for breakfast and a tour of the Houdini Museum, then proceeded to Iola for lunch and a variety of afternoon activities: antique shopping, a cruise on the Chain O’ Lakes, and visiting with KP coin experts in the Iola office. Those involved with planning and executing the trip included Maggie Pahl, Nicole Florence, Judy Driebel, Jackie Baldwin, Mark Moran, Eric Krszjzaniek, Kelly and Eric Bradley, and Wait.
- Tamara Beardsley, Bill Bright, Karen Thulien, and Kevin Isaacson coordinated the efforts.
